What should you do if your child has been in an accident?

As a parent, one of the most frightening situations you could face is your child being involved in an accident. Whether it’s a car accident, a slip/fall at school or an injury during play; accidents can cause physical injury and emotional distress. It is important to act quickly and take active steps.

Firstly, write everything down - accidents happen so fast, and whilst your priority is of course your child, memories fade, so it’s important to record pertinent information as soon as you can. This will include:

  • Where it happened
  • What time it happened
  • What happened before
  • What happened after
  • What you think the cause of the accident was
  • What anyone said that could be relevant to who was responsible for the accident
  • Details of any witnesses
  • If the accident involved a vehicle take down the vehicle type, car registration number and the names of the driver/drivers involved

Secondly, take photos if you can of what you think caused the accident, as well photographs of your child’s injuries.

Thirdly, seek medical attention from a GP or hospital. This will be a record of their injuries and what caused them and will help to show how much pain and suffering they went through when it comes to making a Personal Injury claim.

Finally, keep track of your expenses - keep a record of all the costs you’ve had to pay out because of your child’s accident. Things like the cost of travelling to and from the hospital, paying for childcare, or even loss of earnings if you’ve had to take time off work.

If your child has been injured and you want to discuss your options give our Personal Injury team a call today.
